Kunga Dorje is a twenty-two-year-old artist. He has been in
Norbulingka Institute since 2010, where he is doing his studies. He arrived
in Dharamsala in 2004 for school. Before, he lived in his family home, in
Kinnaur, a culturally Tibetan district of Himachal Pradesh in India, near
the Tibet border. He was born in Kinnaur, like his parents, who are still
there. He loves his studies, and has liked painting since his childhood. In
Norbulingka, he paints thangkas. He is the only painter of the village where
he comes. He is certainly the first to ever have become a painter, and is
passionate about this work.
In his village, there is only one stupa. When he looks at this one, he feels
very bad and thinks, “One day, I will build one with my own
hands.” Kunga thinks that the arts are important for Tibetan culture in
exile. Thangkas are a style of Buddhist paintings, and all Tibetan history is
represented in these paintings, because it is a very holy art. Since the
beginning of his studies, Kunga has painted 4 thangkas. Actually he is a
new asrtist. He enjoys his life in Norbulingka where he has met many great
people. He wants to improve his artistic skills, because in his future, he
sees himself in Kinnaur, where he would like to build a monastery.
